Courses for Practice Trainees

Practice Trainees are required to complete the following courses before they are able to apply for admission under the new legal regime as advocates and solicitors pursuant to Rule 41 of the Practice Training Period Guidelines 2024 read with rule 34(b) of the Legal Profession (Admission) Rules 2024:

  • e-Learning: Ethics in Practice; and
  • e-Learning: Legal Profession (Solicitors’ Accounts) Rules;
  • Law Society’s Advocacy Workshop

Completion of these courses are not required for admission as a Lawyer (Non-Practitioner).

All Practice Trainees are only required to register:

  1. ONE session on e-Learning: Ethics in Practice*;
  2. ONE session on e-Learning: Legal Profession (Solicitors’ Accounts) Rules*; and
  3. ONE group of Practice Training Advocacy Course (consist of one virtual and one physical workshop)

*There is no deadline or cap for the registration of the two e-learning courses, Ethics in Practice & Legal Profession (Solicitors’ Accounts) Rules; registration for these two courses will remain available online unless otherwise stated. However, there will be expiry to the courses once the confirmation note consisting of the login credentials is sent to you, hence you are encouraged to plan your schedule ahead and sign up at your convenience to ensure sufficient time for course completion. No extension of access is allowed.

1. Ethics in Practice

Ethics in Practice is structured as a comprehensive programme using mini lectures and case-study discussions to provide an in-depth understanding of how complex professional ethics issues arise in a practice environment. Through interactive roleplaying exercises and videos, participants will learn how to make better ethical decisions and enhance their awareness of ethical issues that are embedded in real-life situations. To reinforce participants’ learning, a learning assessment will be conducted at the end of the programme.

Desired Outcome

By the end of Ethics in Practice, the participants will have an understanding of the following:

  • How complex professional ethics issues arise in a practice environment;
  • How to make better ethical decisions; and
  • How to enhance awareness of ethical issues that are embedded in real-life situations.

2. Legal Profession (Solicitors' Accounts) Rules

Legal Profession (Solicitors’ Accounts) Rules is intended to equip practitioners with the essential foundation to understanding solicitor’s roles and responsibilities under the Legal Profession (Solicitors’ Accounts) Rules and the implications and impact of breach of these rules. It is structured as a comprehensive programme. using mini-lectures and case-study discussions with our experts to enhance learning of key accounting principles and concepts every legal practitioner should know. A learning assessment based on the learning outcomes of the primer will be administered at the end of the course to gauge the extent of understanding of the registrant.

Desired Outcome

By the end of Legal Profession (Solicitors’ Accounts) Rules, the participants will have an understanding of the following:

  • The rationale for rules made under Legal Profession Act relating to solicitors’ accounts
  • Key accounting principles and concepts; and
  • Solicitor’s roles and responsibilities under the Legal Profession (Solicitors’ Accounts) Rules.

3. Practice Training Advocacy Course

The Practice Training Advocacy Course is run by experienced senior litigators comprising inter alia Senior Counsels, Senior and Experienced Practitioners as well as Legal Service Officers (i.e. High Court Assistant Registrars, State Courts District Judges and Deputy Public Prosecutors).

Our trainers are experienced in deploying the Hampel Method and/or National Institute for Trial Advocacy (“NITA”) Method for teaching trial advocacy. Some trainers have also had experience training pupils/trainee barristers in other common law jurisdictions such as Australia, Scotland, Malaysia, Hong Kong and South Africa.

During the Advocacy Workshops, candidates will be coached on:

  1. The basics of good advocacy including ethics and etiquette;
  2. The techniques of analysing a case and developing a persuasive case theory;
  3. The techniques of structuring and presenting a sound, persuasive oral argument;
  4. The basic techniques of examining and cross examining a witness; and
  5. Delivering an effective and sound plea in mitigation.

The Advocacy Programme consists of:

  1. 9 basic advocacy knowledge-based lectures which candidates will access via e-Learning programmes and which must be completed prior to attending the workshops;
  2. Each candidate will attend a half-day workshop conducted via Zoom (the “Virtual Workshops“), and another half-day workshop in person (the “Physical Workshops“).

Registration fee of $1057.30 (including GST) is applicable for each run of the programme, and is on first-come-first-serve basis. Practice Trainees will be informed via email when registration for the workshops from April – September 2025 is open.
