The Honourable Society of The Inner Temple

The Inner Temple is one of the four Inns of Court, unincorporated membership associations which have existed since the 14th Century. The Inns of Court hold the exclusive right to Call students to practise law at the Bar of England and Wales. We play a significant role in the recruitment of student members, training of aspiring barristers and continuing professional development of established practitioners. We also hold responsibilities for the regulatory system of the Bar, along with the Bar Council and Bar Standards Board.

We are an Inn with a global membership that is ever progressive in strengthening and promoting the rule of law and a vibrant, diverse, legal community. Led and shaped by the profession for the profession, we are dedicated to attracting the best candidates and ensuring that everyone, at each stage of their career, has access to excellent education and training resources so they can develop and thrive.

The Inner Temple has over 10,000 qualified members, including Judges, Barristers (both practising and non-practising) and Pupils. Each year approximately 350 students apply to join the Inn, including those from the Commonwealth and other international countries, with the intention of training for the Bar. Our graduates go on to practise at the Bar, take judicial appointments, enter the political arena and become distinguished law academics wherever they live.

We have always welcomed members from around the world and we are very proud that Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi studied law and was Called to the Bar with us in the 1880s. He is our greatest alumnus. Today our international alumni includes the Chief Justice of Singapore and other current and former Supreme Court justices in the United States, Hong Kong, Malaysia, India, Pakistan, New Zealand and the Caribbean. They are an inspiration for the young lawyers who join us every year and where they are taught the highest ethical standards upon which the rule of law relies.

Each year senior members of the Inn, known as Benchers, elect a Treasurer to serve as the head of the organisation. The current Treasurer is The Rt Hon Lady Justice Gloster DBE, a judge of the Court of Appeal.

Singapore Academy of Law (SAL)

The Singapore Academy of Law (SAL) is a promotion and development agency for Singapore’s legal industry. Our vision is to make Singapore the legal hub of Asia.

SAL works with our stakeholders to set new precedents of excellence in Singapore law through developing thought leadership, world class infrastructure and legal solutions. Our mandates are to build up the intellectual capital of the legal profession by enhancing legal knowledge, raise the international profile of Singapore law, promote Singapore as a centre for dispute resolution, and improve the standards and efficiency of legal practice through continuing professional development and the use of technology.

As a body established by statute, SAL also undertakes statutory functions such as stakeholding services and appointment of Senior Counsel, Commissioners for Oaths and Notaries Public.

SAL is led by a Senate headed by Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon, and comprising the Attorney-General, the Supreme Court Bench and key leaders of the various branches of the legal profession. It has more than 12,000 members, including the Bench, all persons who are called as advocates and solicitors of the Supreme Court (i.e. the Bar) or appointed as Legal Service Officers, corporate counsel, faculty members of the three local law schools (i.e. National University of Singapore, Singapore Management University and Singapore University of Social Sciences) and foreign lawyers in Singapore.

SAL Academy Publishing, formed in 2007, curates and publishes both primary and secondary legal material to nurture the learning environment and catalyse new ideas. Our vision is to build and aggregate Singapore legal literature for the Singapore legal profession.

Through our law reports, law books and academic journals, available both via print and online, we aim to:

  • disseminate the laws of Singapore to a wider public in the region and internationally;
  • provide affordable legal materials to the legal profession; and
  • offer an alternative avenue to the academics in our law schools to publish their research, thereby raising awareness of their work and encouraging the exchange of ideas critical to the advancement of legal knowledge and research.

The Singapore International Commercial Court (SICC)

With increasing globalisation and trade in Asia, instances and complexity of commercial disputes are expected to rise. The Singapore International Commercial Court (SICC) was established in 2015 as a trusted neutral venue to meet this demand for effective international commercial dispute resolution services in Asia. It provides a framework for the resolution of international commercial disputes in accordance with substantive principles of international commercial law and best practices.

As a division of the Singapore High Court and part of the Supreme Court of Singapore, the SICC comes with features that enable parties to gain access to swift and quality justice. For example, cases will be managed and heard by experienced Judges-specialist commercial Judges from Singapore and renowned international Judges from civil and common law traditions.

Parties have the right of appeal, unless they contract otherwise. They also have different options for representation. They may, in certain circumstances, be represented by foreign lawyers who are registered with the SICC.

The SICC adopts a set of flexible court procedures. For instance, parties can apply for their proceedings to be confidential, or mutually seek that proceedings be governed by rules of evidence of their choice. There is also the ability to join third and related parties – effective in multi-party, multi-contracts situations.

Importantly, the SICC is built on the strong foundations of the Supreme Court of Singapore, which has been recognised for its integrity, fairness and efficiency, and is established as a trusted and neutral dispute resolution forum of choice for businesses engaged in international transactions.
